After this long, cold, exceptionally BLAH winter – I’m more than ready for a breath of fresh air. In fact, I am ready to spray paint our front yard bright green if Mother Nature doesn’t start cooperating SOON. 🙂
This lack of color seems to have taken over the inside of our house, too. Especially in our living room – it is the most BLAND and lifeless room… maybe ever.
Okay, maybe its not quite THAT bad – but it is feeling really drab and uninspired at the moment.
Fortunately, the “bones” of the room are good. Good size, nice fireplace, large window… but for some unknown reason, my husband and I made a snap decision when buying the furniture…
… and we screwed up. Big Time.
For starters, it’s freakin’ huge. As in… crazy deep. You have to scramble to climb out of it. And forget about sitting all the way back if you want to bend your knees at a natural angle or if you want your feet to hit the floor.
Plus, it eats up way more floor space than any couch should.
It is also a deep, dark chocolate brown. Don’t judge. I’m pretty sure we were trying to be practical… with 3 kids, 2 dogs and a cat, it seemed like a very grown-up decision at the time.
The dark color would be fine, (it mostly camouflages errant pet hair) – but the wall color we choose (‘Escape Gray’ by Sherwin Williams) doesn’t work with it. Not in such large doses, anyway.
Our accent color (‘Plum Brown,’ also by Sherwin Williams) looks great with the ‘Escape Gray’ and the creamy ‘Dover White’ (SW) wood trim – but, the dark brown couches act like an energy-sucking black hole right smack in the middle of our main living area.
In short, our furniture is pretty awful, but we need to work around it. (On the plus side, I don’t care if the girls spill stuff on it).
There are two solutions for this – the ‘Escape Grey’ on the walls needs to go. The room is begging for something lighter, brighter and warmer. But… I haven’t sold my husband on that one just yet.
In the meantime, it really needs some really cool, fun throw pillows to brighten it up a bit (and maybe make those damn couches a wee bit more comfortable).
Unfortunately, I’m having ZERO LUCK finding anything “non-ugly” at local stores this season.
So… I’ve taken my search online and found a lot more options – but many were pretty pricey and/or not-exactly-kid-dog-cat friendly, ya know?
Then I saw these customized throw pillows – and thought, how cool is that?? (affiliate link)
Although I wouldn’t put my own photo on them, I love how versatile this idea is.
Just think of all the fun ways you could personalize them. You could turn your favorite garden, vacation or pet photos into functional accent pieces. Or maybe feature a great picture of your front porch or your house from the street.
They would also make great gifts for a lot of occasions – graduations, house warming parties, baby showers, or weddings. You could create inspirational quote graphics, feature significant dates, or make a collage of several images as shown in the above picture.
The pillows can be customized on both sides (love!) – and come in two sizes: 14″ x 14″ and 16″ x 16.” The are available in 3 fabrics: cashmere, satin and flannel. (I personally question image quality on the flannel or even the cashmere option – think it would depend on the level of detail in the graphic).
You will need to use a high-resolution image – the standard 72 dpi that works online won’t work. I did not have the best luck when I had a few images from my iPhone printed – they looked terrible. So, I recommend using an image taken with a decent digital camera. If you need help, check out a site like Elance to find a graphic designer who can help you create an image file that works.
